"Mayor Cathleen DeSimone will be sending a request to the city council to borrow $50 million to fund a plant to remove permanent polyfluoroalkyls, or PFAS, from the drinking water supply.
City Auditor Deb Gould informed the council’s public works committee of the mayor’s intention this week.
Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS have been determined to be a health hazard over long periods of time.
The plant will be constructed on city-owned property near the current Wading River treatment facility.
In May, it was expected to cost $35 million, but it could go to $39 million or $42 million, Gould said. So the mayor is not taking any chances and will ask for $50 million."
