"In a lawsuit filed Monday, the city of Fort Worth blames the federal government, the military, and several chemical manufacturers for contaminating its water supply with so-called "forever chemicals."

The suit accuses these entities of discharging such compounds, known officially as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS, into Lake Worth.

Last year, Fort Worth declined to join with other municipalities who've filed a class action lawsuit against some of the same entities. It instead opted to pursue its own lawsuit in hopes of a bigger payout: at least $420 million.

"We are committed to protecting our drinking water and public health; this legal action is necessary in that effort," a city spokesperson said in a statement to WFAA."
