"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Thursday that it has reached an agreement with the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA) that addresses last year's accidental release of "forever chemicals" in Brunswick.

On the morning of Aug. 19, 2024, approximately 1,450 gallons of firefighting foam that contained per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were discharged from a fire suppression system hangar at the Brunswick Executive Airport.

PFAS are a group of chemicals that have been around for decades and have now spread into the nation’s air, water and soil. The chemicals help ensure firefighting foam suffocates flames, but they resist breaking down, which means they stay around in the environment and can be hazardous to people."
