"Residents in parts of the Hudson Valley with private wells can now apply for free water testing under a new state pilot program aimed at detecting so-called “forever chemicals.”

The program offers free testing for polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, a group of unhealthy synthetic chemicals that persist in the environment and are linked to drinking water contamination. Homeowners whose wells test at or above New York’s drinking water standards for PFAS may qualify for rebates up to $5,000 for whole-house treatment systems or up to $10,000 for connection to public water.

The pilot is open to properties in six counties, including Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Westchester and Putnam, the state Department of Health announced. Residents of Suffolk County, on Long Island, are also eligible."
