"PFAS, often referred to by the ominous nickname "forever chemicals," are found in drinking water throughout the U.S., including in North Carolina's water supply.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that PFAS stands for "per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances." The EPA's webpage on these substances adds that, while the organization knows many things about PFAS including that they are "widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time," there are many things that we have yet to understand.
Despite the lingering mysteries around these substances, PFAS are detectable in drinking water supplies. Here's what to know about so-called "forever chemicals," their presence in N.C. waters and more."
