This chapter aims to serve as a guide to those who are considering transitioning away from firefighting foams containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to apply fluorine free firefighting (F3) foams. The objectives are to assist with transitioning to F3 foams by providing a summary of the properties and extinguishment accreditations achieved by multiple F3 foams and outline pragmatic approaches to adopting safer fire extinguishment systems based on F3 foams. A summary of evolving regulations considering PFAS, the rationale behind them and how this impacts decisions to adopt F3 foams over those containing PFAS is included. This aims to inform stakeholders regarding potential current and future liabilities associated with the continued use of firefighting foams containing PFAS and timeframes over which adoption of F3 foams may be mandated in differing locations. Disposal options for firefighting foams are also discussed.
