Consumers will soon see PFAS icon on products in New Mexico

"Are harmful chemicals hiding in the everyday products inside your home? The New Mexico Environment Department is hoping to solve that question with a landmark rule aimed at labeling when “forever chemicals” are in items sold on New Mexico store shelves.

Whether it’s flossing, cooking in pans, getting in a car, or eating from takeout containers, those basic actions in most New Mexicans’ lives may also expose them to forever chemicals called “PFAS”. “They’re a type of, of chemical that are really persistent, meaning they’re hard to break down,” said James Kenney, Cabinet Secretary, New Mexico Environment Department.

Kenney said the health impacts are serious: “The bigger molecules have caused things like high cholesterol, reproductive issues in both men and women, certain types of cancers.”
