Invited Perspective: The Promise of Fit-for-Purpose Systematic Evidence Maps for Supporting Regulatory Health Assessment
Science
17 May 2022 | EHP
A primary goal of systematic evidence maps (SEMs) in environmental health is to gather large amounts of data to support deeper scientific analyses and decision-making that protects public health and the environment. SEMs can be extremely useful for assessing large chemical classes, such as PFAS. However, a comparison of two different SEM approaches highlights that many available PFAS studies might not be considered in the U.S. EPA health assessments.

Pilot-Scale Continuous Foam Fractionation for the Removal of Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) from Landfill Leachate
Science
17 May 2022 | ACS ES&T Water
Foam fractionation was found to remove PFAS from landfill leachate, with higher removal efficiencies for long-chain PFAS compared to short-chain PFAS.

Ultra-Short-Chain PFASs in the Sources of German Drinking Water: Prevalent, Overlooked, Difficult to Remove, and Unregulated
Science
17 May 2022 | ES&T
Ultra-short-chain PFAS represent a major challenge in drinking water due to their high concentrations, greater mobility, and lack of remediation options, which shows that regulation through preventive measures is required to manage them.

Fluorine Mass Balance Analysis and Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in the Atmosphere
Science
17 May 2022 | J. Hazard. Mater.
Ultra-short-chain PFAS were identified as the predominant components in outdoor air and organofluorine compounds were found to concentrate indoors in fine particles. A fluorine mass balance analysis revealed that up to 99% of PFAS in the atmosphere are unidentified.

Environmental Exposure to 6:2 Polyfluoroalkyl Phosphate Diester and Impaired Testicular Function in Men
Science
17 May 2022 | Environ Sci Technol
Exposure to 6:2 diPAP may impair androgen synthesis and Leydig cell function in adult men, reducing the ability to regulate hormones.

Maine bans use of sewage sludge on farms to reduce risk of PFAS poisoning
News
13 May 2022 | The Guardian
Maine last month became the first state to ban the practice of spreading PFAS-contaminated sewage sludge as fertilizer.

‘Forever chemicals’ found in nearly 60% of children’s ‘waterproof’ or ‘stain-resistant’ textiles
News
10 May 2022 | The Hill
Nearly 60% of children’s textiles labeled “waterproof”, “stain-resistant”, or “environmentally friendly” that were tested as part of a new study contained toxic PFAS substances known as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment.

Putting the Brakes on Toxic “Forever Chemicals” in Maryland
Policy
10 May 2022
On April 21, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed into state law SB0273/HB0275, the George “Walter” Taylor Act, which curtails the introduction of new PFAS into the environment.
-
Official health communications are failing PFAS-contaminated communities
Science
10 May 2022 | Environmental Health
Immediate action should be undertaken to review and improve official health communications intended to inform the public and health providers about the risks of PFAS exposure and guide community and medical decisions.

Ultra-Short-Chain PFASs in the Sources of German Drinking Water: Prevalent, Overlooked, Difficult to Remove, and Unregulated
Science
10 May 2022 | ES&T
“PFAS total” parameters like the adsorbable organic fluorine and total oxidizable precursor assay were found to provide only an incomplete picture of PFAS contamination in these water samples by not capturing these highly prevalent ultra-short-chain PFASs.

Suspect Screening and Chemical Profile Analysis of Stormwater Runoff Following 2017 Wildfires in Northern California
Science
10 May 2022 | Environ Toxicol Chem
Stormwater runoff from the San Francisco Bay area was found to have increased levels of PFAS after seasonal wildfires leading to potential ecological risk.

How Well Do Product Labels Indicate the Presence of PFAS in Consumer Items Used by Children and Adolescents?
Science
10 May 2022 | Environ Sci Technol
PFAS were detected in many products used by children and adolescents including clothing, face masks, mattress and pillow protectors, sheets, rugs, upholstery and menstrual underwear. PFAS were detected more often and at higher levels in products labeled as water- and stain-resistant.

Identification of Branched and Linear Forms of PFOA and Potential Precursors: A User-Friendly SMILES Structure-based Approach.
Science
10 May 2022 | Front Environ Sci
A new computational toxicology method searched a database of over 10,700 structures and correctly classified PFOA and its related compounds as defined by the Stockholm Convention, with 100% sensitivity and 99.7% accuracy.

AFFF and PFAS At Forefront of Federal Action This Week
Policy
2 May 2022
Not long after the DOD provided a report in which it identified substitutes for PFAS-containing AFFF but indicated that each might not be feasible, legislators yesterday continued to apply pressure to the federal government with proposed legislation to ban the manufacture, import, and sale of any PFAS-containing AFFF in the United States.
